Woohoo!!!  Everyone has successfully chosen a poem and memorized the first 4 lines!  I cannot tell you how proud I am of you all for working so hard this morning and for being brave enough to recite in front of us all!  The more you expose yourself to an audience, the more comfortable you will become.  Now….everyone should be chanting these lines over and over and over because there are many more lines to learn!  Have a great weekend and try to use some of the memorization techniques that we discussed in class over the past two days!

Today we:

  • focused, focused, focused
  • memorized and analyzed the first 4 lines of our poems
  • happily recited in front of the class 🙂

January 29, 2015 Hooray for Poetry Out Loud!

Welcome back!!!  I’m so excited to be starting our Poetry Out Loud unit this week!  Today, we started class by talking about poetry…what it is, why it’s awesome and inspiring, and how we are going to challenge ourselves to better understand poetry and become poets ourselves.

Today we:

  • read and analyzed the poem “I, Too” by Langston Hughes.  Awesome job!
  • chose two poems to focus on memorizing with great vigor and excitement!
  • briefly read and analyzed 1 of the two poems selected
  • watched a POL video giving us memorization tips

Friday, 1/16/15

Here’s how I feel today:

I wrote you each a goodbye letter, so I will give those to you today during class.  Other things we will be doing:

  • Eating muffins!
  • Writing/drawing on the big kraft paper with markers
  • Making paper bags for each person (write your name on your bag and design it)
  • Writing at least three classmates a sweet note to put in their bags
  • Watching a slideshow of Cuffee pictures
  • Watching some videos we’ve made, like last year’s advisory music video, your awesome project videos, etc.
  • Hugging!
  • Remembering that this does not mean that we can’t still keep in touch– please email me at jillianbelanger@gmail.com on the days you signed up for (and whenever you want!), and please ask me for recommendation letters next year if you’d like to!

When it’s your Friday to write, please send me an email about what went on in the class that week (jillianbelanger@gmail.com – don’t forget!), and what went on in your life, and whatever else you want to tell me.  I’ll write back over the weekend, and you can read part or all of my response to the class on Monday if you’d like.  (Ms. Slaiger said this would be ok!)

You’re all amazing people, and I’m going to miss you more than  you could ever know.

Let’s circle up!

Unfortunately, I was not able to procure either computer lab for us today, but we will have two circles going in class: one for students who would like to type their website posts on their phones or on a laptop, and one for students who would like to work on the assigned reading for today, which is pages 189-201.  Whichever you don’t choose to do will be your homework, party people!

The three writing prompts you have to choose from for this post are:

  1. Type the letter you wrote from Dana to Kevin.
  2. Type your character analysis.
  3. Write a speech that you imagine you would give to high school students if you were to come to a school when you’re in college, the way the BOND men did yesterday morning.

This morning’s thought of the week was a great example of what I’m going to miss SO MUCH at this school!  Be thinking about what you would say, if you were to fast forward to your college years and be given the opportunity to talk to high school students.

Please keep in mind what the members of BOND had to say about focusing in school as you work on the following things today:

  • Write about the character of your choice on the handout provided to you
  • Participate in a Socratic Seminar about the relationships and interactions between characters
  • Read pages 174-188, and finish whatever you don’t get to for homework tomorrow

Dana wrote a letter to Kevin that Rufus promised to mail.  In the beginning of the pages you are responsible for today (p. 161-174), Dana and Rufus have a conversation about that letter.  On the handout provided to you, write the letter you imagine Dana wrote to Kevin.  What would she want to tell him?  Ask him?  How would she write it?

The full plan for today:

  • Write the letter from Dana to Kevin
  • Read pages 161-174 whole group
  • Go over the calendar for reading and Poetry Out Loud
  • Write your letter writing assignments down in your agendas!
